A Month In Review: October

Wow! What a month it has been! My last day with a part-time job was October 6th, so it has already been almost a month since taking my lettering business full-time. I’m amazed by the amount of work I can get done with a completely open schedule and a lot has happened, but I’m just gonna share the highlights.

My book release date is set!Romans_Devo_Etsy

This month, I spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out some manufacturing issues I came across with my book. Thankfully I got them worked out and was able to order the first round of books just in time to hit my originally planned deadline of November 14th! If everything hadn’t fallen into place right when they did, things would have gotten tricky with promo stuff I had planned for the book, upcoming holiday sales and events. I cannot wait for you to hold this book in your hands, use it in your personal Bible studies, and/or be inspired by the lettering within it. I’m happy to announce, you can pre-order my new book, Romans: A Hand Lettered Devotional, at my Etsy shop starting tomorrow, November 1st! Each book will be sold for $14.95 (tax included in the price).

Speaking of my Etsy shop…

I updated my shop!

Romans_8_Square_Watermark_Stock_PhotoMy Etsy shop has needed a makeover for a long time and I finally got around to giving it the love and attention it needed. I tried to take my own photos… spent hours upon hours editing and wasn’t happy with how they turned out, so I spent a little money on some stock photos and it was well worth it! I feel this look better showcases the art I so carefully create and what would have taken me a week to put together, only took me an afternoon. Click HERE to check out the lovely made-over shop (and start getting gift ideas too)!

Also, as of yesterday, my Special Edition 8×10 Romans 8 prints are available at my shop! They are so beautiful, I had to print an extra one for myself. Be sure to check them out and pick one (or two or three…) up before they’re gone!

I hosted my first workshop! Well… kinda.FullSizeRender 2

As many of you know, I am launching my first Brush Lettering workshop locally starting November 11th. However, I didn’t want to go into teaching without a little practice and advice, so I hosted a pilot workshop with some of my old co-workers and it was a blast! I can say confidently that these women had a blast and it was so fun to watch them use the FullSizeRendermaterials I put together and start to get the hang of brush lettering. The workshop was a success but, I do have a few things I need to add to my curriculum and packets. Even though I’m bummed I still have some work to do, I was expecting it and I’m thankful my friends and I figured out what else I needed to do to maximize each student’s experience.

If you’d like to sign up for one of my workshops, click HERE to register. There are still a few spots left in my December 9th class. I would love to have you there!

I was on a podcast for the first time!

A couple weeks ago, I was interviewed on the How to Fail! podcast. The hosts (Kristin and Tina) interview different small business owners about their failures… sounds depressing, right? FALSE! This is one of the most positive podcasts I’ve listened to and I’ve been so21768945_177564896153910_2661247101149267913_o encouraged by others who’ve been on the show and how they turned their failures into something good for their businesses and their lives.

I talked about my transition from full-time music into full-time hand lettering, my moments of success and feelings of failure through that process. The reason I wanted to be on the podcast was because I am someone with multiple creative passions and I know there are other people out there like me who struggle feeling pulled in many different creative directions. So, I hoped I could offer some helpful advice based on what I’ve learned from my personal experiences and how I’m learning to find my identity in who I am as a person (who Christ says I am!), instead of in what I do creatively. Kristin put it in way prettier words that I can’t remember off the top of my head, so we’ll all just have to listen when the episode comes out… TOMORROW!!

Those were just a few of the highlights! I’ve got a lot of exciting things coming up… releasing my book, Romans: A Hand Lettered Devotional, launching my local Beginner Brush Lettering workshop, Black Friday/Small Biz Saturday/Cyber Monday sales… and more!

P.S. Keep these dates in mind over the next few weeks. I’d hate for you to miss out on having your dream custom piece created or your favorite print purchased by Christmas.

Yay Workshops!

Hey there, friends!

Beg. Brush Lettering Ad 3Just dropping in to say thanks to those of you who have registered for one of my local Beginner Brush Lettering workshops! I am thrilled to announce my November 11th class was completely filled in less than 24 hours after sign-ups being opened. Y’all have no idea how much joy and excitement that brings me! I can see your names and why many of you want to learn to letter and boy does that get me pumped for when we meet one month from today!

Thanks to the few of you who signed up for December 9th! I’m just as excited to meet you all too! If any of you reading this still want to sign up for a workshop, this is the workshop to sign up for since there are still some spots open.

On the fence about signing up?

Let me share something with you that I think will put many of you who are on the fence at ease. 😉

I hear the phrase, “but I’m not artistic,” A LOT. So much, it hurts. Literally. It hurts my heart to hear people give up before they’ve even tried or given brush lettering a fair shot. Here is my answer to that (and I can’t say this enough):

If you can learn to hand write, you can learn to brush letter.

Remember when you learned to write as a little kid? Remember how slow you had to go and how shaky your letters were? But with practice, eventually hand writing became more comfortable and now you’ve been writing so many years, you don’t even have to think about it.

Brush lettering is a lot like that. Yes, I’ll admit it helps to have some creative abilities down the road when you get into more advanced styles, materials, and creating compositions, but ANYONE can learn the basics. Everyone can learn to brush letter to create handmade cards for friends and family, to make your holiday card addresses look beautiful, or to simply create beautiful letters for your own enjoyment.

We all have to start somewhere and there is no time like the present (especially with the holidays coming up)! So, put that fear and doubt aside, come alongside me and a group of other lovely beginners, and lets learn to brush letter together! Are you ready??

Book Update: I got my first proof!

Hey there!

Exciting news today! I got home later than usual this evening and there was a box leaning against my door. I knew that box contained the proof of my book!

Good news!

I ripped that box open to find my book! It was my first time seeing my 350+ hours of work in print and I was so pleased! All my fears of this book being a disappointment to me and to you all instantly vanished. I can tell you with confidence, I am so proud to send these out to all of you who pre-ordered and sell them to, God willing, many many more people!

Still some work to do

The book isn’t done just yet, though. Unfortunately, there were some weird things that showed up on a couple pages that weren’t a part of my design. I’m looking into how to fix that printing problem. I still need to read through the entire book one more time to make sure it’s all good to go. I’ve read through the content so many times on my computer, but there’s something different about reading it in print. Often times you catch things you didn’t see before, but I’m really hoping my editors and I did an amazing job beforehand and there won’t be any further changes.

Please pray…

I’m hoping to get all of my edits done by Friday afternoon and submit them, so I can get another proof before printing all the copies. Please pray that once I make my edits, I’ll receive a new proof in the mail that is exactly the way I want it to be, so then I can print all the books that will be going out to you! I need everything to happen smoothly and promptly in order to release this book the first or second week of November.

Anyway, that’s my update for today! Stay tuned for more updates over the coming weeks!

❤ Lauren

Thank you for a successful pre-order!

Wow! I don’t really know what else to say. I just had a speechless moment, where my fingers locked up as I was typing and all I could write was, “thank you,” and, “wow!”

Thank you!

I’m so thankful for each and every one of you who pre-ordered my new book, Romans: A Hand Lettered Devotional. In the end, over 70 people pre-ordered and over $3,500 was made to put toward printing the books. I am grateful for your trust in me and that you would purchase a book that wasn’t finished yet – a book that didn’t yet have a cover, or finalized content, or a page count. I’m so happy to say, as promised from the beginning, that all of that now exists and I’m in the final proofing process before I print all the copies that will be shipped out to the lovely people who pre-ordered! I’m excited to get that first copy in the mail to hold, to feel, and to read.

But can I be honest for a sec? I’m nervous about when I get that first proof. I’m nervous my cover isn’t gonna look quite right, I’m nervous I’ll open it and find tons of mistakes even after all my edits and read throughs. I’m nervous I’ll be disappointed with the overall look of it. It ended up being 40 pages and I’m worried about it looking too thin. I’m worried I won’t just be disappointed, but that you will be let down too.

Like I said, I’m also extremely excited. I’m excited about how many of you have expressed interest in my book. I’m excited about the ways I’ve already seen God move in the making of this book and that can only mean He will do great things once it’s released! I’m excited to get that first proof – to hold it and to see my hundreds of hours over the past three months in the form they were meant to be in. I’m excited to ship the books out to you and to pray for you as I do so. I’m excited to hear about who these books are going to – how they will impact lives creatively and spiritually. I’m excited for the stories I won’t hear, but knowing and trusting Jesus is doing His work through this book. I’m excited to start using it as a teaching tool during Bible lettering workshops I’ll be hosting in a few months. And (let’s be honest, again) I’m excited to have A LOT more free time to work on other new creative projects!

Thank you. Wow! I’m amazed by God’s hand in this project and your continued support and interest. I’m truly blessed by every single one of your who have prayed, sent an encouraging message, cheered me on, pre-ordered and/or followed me along in the process over the past few months. If it weren’t for each and every one of you, I probably would have given up. So, I can honestly say I couldn’t have done it without you.

❤ Lauren

P.S. I won’t be doing my usual “Month in Review” post for September, since I’ve already been posting all month about what I’ve been up to. 😉
